Indian Experience through IISAC.
IISAC provides an orientation tour from the moment students’ step off the plane. Upon arrival to Bhubaneswar, students will be guided by the director of IISAC around the city and other sites around Odisha. Students also learn important issues such as cultural and academic adjustments, environment, health, safety, food, etc.
The Odisha Tourist triangle is the first part of the orientation tour before the semester begins. Generally orientation lasts for 6 days immediately upon arrival in Odisha followed by a 10 discovery tour of East India; Kolkata, Darjeeling, Sikkim and Himalayas.
The Odisha Triangle – Tourist Circuit of Odisha (Bhubaneswar, Konark, Puri)
Konark is home to the infamous Sun Temple, only 40 km away from Bhubaneswar. Erotic sculptures and female figures decorate the outside of the temple. The Sun Temple is a translation of a Rig Veda (the most ancient scripture of India) allegory in stone. It is perfectly located at Chandrabhaga Beach, which is famous for its incredible sunrises and sunsets.
Puri is known for having some of the most beautiful, golden beaches in the world. It is not only famous for upscale resorts but it is a pilgrim town and believed to be one of the four most sacred places for Hindus because of the Jagannath Temple and world famous Cart Festival. This is also an excellent place to purchase local art, handicrafts and one of kind souvenirs.
Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, known as the city of temples. This ancient city attracts millions of people from all over the world. Its significance can be felt just by walking around the archeological sites and taking in all the history it holds. A tour around the beautiful campus is also included.
The second part of the tour includes a 10 day tour of Eastern India .This is a chance for students to explore the cities of Kolkata and Darjeeling (located in West Bengal) and Gangtok (located in Sikkim) and the surrounding Himalayas and Mt. Everest.
Kolkata, home to 15.2 million people, is the previous British capital of India in the state of West Bengal. This buzzing metropolitan area is known for its colonial infrastructure and monuments. It is the birthplace of modern Indian literacy and the arts. Mother Theresa, the world famous missionary, operated her charity in the heart of Kolkata.
Darjeeling is located in West Bengal in the highlands known as the lesser Himalayas. Its steep hills have an average elevation of 6,710 ft., where the peak of Mt. Everest is visible among the surrounding mountains. It is also famous for its extensive tea industry and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim, which borders Nepal and China. This area also rests in the Lesser Himalayas where views of Mt. Kanchenjunga (the world’s third tallest peak) can be seen. Gangtok has a heavy Tibetan Buddhist influence with many elaborate monasteries.
Outside classroom getaways.
During the semester, students are free to travel to any desired destination on weekends or holidays. Your experience in India is ultimately what you make it.
IISAC offers a subsidized and guided tour to travel to areas in North India including Delhi, Agra (Taj Mahal), and Jaipur. Depending upon interest, IISAC can arrange tours at a budgeted price. Two possible tours would include Ladakh, Kashmir, and Dharamshala and another to Kerala, Mysore, and Bangalore. Students are encouraged to work with IISAC to coordinate travel plans to other regions of India before or after the semester end.
